ΤΗΕ ROLE OF THE ORTHODOX CHURCH

Illumination and how to reach it

When we are in the state of illumination, we pray constantly. In a state of complete illumination, the Jesus Prayer is self-acting. This means it is being said by itself ceaselessly within our heart.

The question is how to get there.

In the beginning we sort of squeeze ourselves, so we get used to pray.

What does a baby do, when it comes out of its mother’s womb? It cries, because it comes out into a new environment. If it doesn’t cry, it will not be able to take a breath. Right? It must cry, to take its first breath. After that, it will be constantly taking new breaths of air. However, if it does not cry, it will suffocate. This is the point, where it needs to be forced (usually a light slap on the buds by the leading physician).

So, this is how it works also with the noetic prayer. In the beginning we will need to force ourselves, but afterwards, when we start breathing (praying), we do not need any force at all. In fact, we will need a force to stop it! We will not be willing to stop our constant praying.

Now, we are in this sick condition, and you know what’s happened to us? We are like someone who’s used to drink petrol!!!

Is it normal to consume petrol?

Of course, not. From the moment on we stop drinking petrol, we will realize what a foolish thing it was to do, and then we will never want to drink it again. This is what it means for a human being to reach the state of illumination. From this moment on, we do not fall, it is not impossible, but very difficult to fall and sin again. And this, because not to sin, believe it or not, is in our human nature.
